As the winter wind in Helsinki mingles with the warm fireworks of the Chinese New Year, a cultural dialogue between Northern and Southern China is about to begin. For Chinese students, this is the time of “sweeping away the dust,” or removing negative elements from the previous year. But, did you know? Due to China's vast territory, the way Northerners and Southerners prepare for the New Year is vastly different. For the North, the New Year begins with the markets. Leading up to the festival, New Year markets of all sizes are bustling with activity. People jostle shoulder to shoulder, choosing auspicious red scrolls, lanterns, frozen pears, and candy. The sounds of haggling and vendors' calls create a vibrant atmosphere. This highly ritualistic collective activity builds immense anticipation for the New Year.
