Helsinki School of Future Engineering Unlocks the "Dual Approach" of Chinese New Year Prep

As the winter wind in Helsinki mingles with the warm fireworks of the Chinese New Year, a cultural dialogue between Northern and Southern China is about to begin. For Chinese students, this is the time of “sweeping away the dust,” or removing negative elements from the previous yearBut, did you know? Due to China's vast territory, the way Northerners and Southerners prepare for the New Year is vastly different. Today, the Helsinki School of Future Engineering takes you through the dimensions of food, customs, and decorations to decode these fascinating differences and feel the authentic Chinese New Year vibe in advance.

Bustling Fairs vs. Quiet Prep

01Year-End Markets:A journey for New Year flavors amidst snow

For the North, the New Year begins with the markets. Leading up to the festival, New Year markets of all sizes are bustling with activity. People jostle shoulder to shoulder, choosing auspicious red scrolls, lanterns, frozen pears, and candy. The sounds of haggling and vendors' calls create a vibrant atmosphere. This highly ritualistic collective activity builds immense anticipation for the New Year.

02Family Gathered:New Year heritage in fingertips

Southern New Year is created by "doing." Preparations center on family collaborations. The whole family gathers together to make rice dumplings (a custom in some southern regions), fry meatballs, and slice cured meats. The work is quiet and warm, with the New Year spirit woven into these handcrafted foods and the harmony passed down through generations.

Stock Up vs. Fresh Pick

01Hundreds of Buns:New Year hopes woven in the kitchen aroma

In northern China, the core pre-Spring Festival task is "stocking up." Due to the harsh, long winters and scarcity of fresh vegetables, people buy large quantities of storable ingredients. Chinese cabbage, potatoes, and radishes are the "holy trinity" for every household. Homemade pickled cabbage is the essential classic on the New Year's Eve table.Northerners also steam hundreds of buns in advance, symbolizing "rising prosperity" for the coming year, a supply meant to last until the Lantern Festival.

02Curated FreshnessCured Meats Fill the Alleys

Thanks to a mild yet humid climate, southern markets have a steady supply of fresh produce year-round. Thus, Southerners prioritize "daily fresh shopping." The focus is on making various types of cured meats—sausages, bacon, and fish hang on balconies, their air-dried aroma the most comforting smell of winter in the South. Meanwhile, seafood (symbolizing "surplus year after year") and glutinous rice products like rice cakes (symbolizing "reunion and prosperity") are must-haves on the Southern shopping list.

Best Wishes At The End

From Northerners hoarding cabbage and steaming buns to Southerners drying cured meats and buying New Year flowers, these seemingly different preparation methods all lead to the same warm destination—family reunion.

Whether youcall Northern or Southern China home, pursue studies in Helsinki, or explore cultures from afar, the Helsinki School of Future Engineering hopes these contrasts reveal the enduring spirit and universal hopes within Chinese New Year.

May everyone harvest abundant happiness and achievements in the coming year! Wishing you all a prosperous Year of the Horse and a Happy Chinese New Year!
